Although I am still relatively new to the Jacksonville area, I am originally a Floridian, having been born in Miami. I spent most of my formative years in Washington, DC and then abroad for many years in London, Paris and West Africa. I returned to D.C. to do my Neurology residency training at Georgetown University.
Like many physicians, I gravitated toward particular areas of medicine because of personal experience. I watched my grandmother battle hypertension and vascular disease and slowly be struck down by stroke after stroke for many years until she finally passed. My personal war with migraines has been lifelong, as was my father's and grandfather's.
I became aware of the lack of acute neurological care, especially while living in West Africa for five years, where if you have a stroke, "God was striking you down" and there was nothing to be done except wait for death. Devastating head trauma from car accidents was common, and, again, one was left to die. It was heartbreaking.
Because of my heavy business background prior to my medical career, I have a deep interest in the "business" side of medicine, including telemedicine, which is quickly becoming mainstream. In the meantime, I am usually kept busy by my son, husband and two golden retrievers, our passion for collecting art, and my favorite pastime of writing.
